No matter how smart you think you are, trust me you aren’t.
best way to improve is by being humble, and reciving critiques, not to blindly listen, but you have to recieve! i’ve talked to my lecturer today, she gave me a lot of good input for my projects… and though i’d s
hare some interesting ones…
My thesis revolves around photography and graphic design, the notion of how persuasive photography is in our society. Being the massive influence they really are, most of the time they’re being exploited by advertisers, and almost always with negative effect, no? I’m trying to address some of these issues… and if i may, i’d want to make my project a good cause! not only address, but will be able to help…
what’s been up with our world? the power of photography, exploited to a point beyond what words put together can explain. The speed of a photograph being taken, till it’s exposed on photoblogs, real time. I believe that with much faster process of things, people appreciate it less. This picture (1st one) is of a women in a bath tub, and the photo is filed under “ARTISTIC NUDE”, seriously, other then exploiting this women’s image, she’s just trying to take a shower for pete’s sake! and the “photographer’s” camera of choice, a nokia 5300. I’ll leave the judging to you. You have a camera phone, and you’re an instant photographer.
Currently, every other photographer would not be simply satisfied with their photos, of course until they went through post-processing, so what is this post processing? better known as photoshopping, colors are adjusted, shades are leveled, skin is smoothed, frame becomes tighter… all these things you can do to make a normal looking picture, into a highly value added one.
example no2 on the balloon girl. for sure we know the sky’s not beige, but through color alteration, it is what we see, but, is seeing really believing now? That’s simple to answer, but not many of the people know it yet. Our eyes are easily decieved, because our eyes are a mere visual receptor, a lens, a mean to transfer an image. So what created the lie? it’s the process after the transfer of an image, our mind will decode the photo, looking for colors, shapes, symbols, mood, relations and many things that i don’t even know myself!
looking at the pic gives me a nostalgic feeling, the colors helps me relate well to a serene feeling… the balloons give it a sense of childhood, fun and color burst! these excite our sensations. we can also see the background, it’s outdoor, the sun is shining, direction of her hair suggestes some wind… a feeling of freedom, positive thoughts, but also about letting go…
normally we wouldn’t decode a picture literally, but an average person actually does have thousands of things going on in their mind while looking at a picture. I decode the pictures in the way I did, because of what i can relate them with, i like outdoor grass field, breeze feels romantic to me, balloons are given on birthdays and i associate it with happiness, but i lost my ballooon many times, so it’s also about letting go. 1 visual, infinite interpretations.

Black and White photography is very interesting, it takes away color. Strip a picture off of its hues, and also it’s color symbolism contexttually. A sick person is pale, if color is taken away, you would see the sick person’s face, body language, relation towards his space, basically a heightened sense of awareness towards a picture.
These kinds of picture is an open board discussion isn’t it? you start asking questions, how old is he?? what does he do? what are those things at the back? oh, cameras, does he take photos? or does he fix them? or does he sell them? or even better still, is he a collector?
The point whereby questions are being asked, and you started studying details within the photo, shows audience participation in decoding a photograph. A photo is just a photo by itself, but the one that embrace, and give meaning to the photograph, is still the viewer. The Afghan Girl photo is a good example, if you blantly see it, it’s a girl, staring back, green eye, red robe, dusty. Contextually though, it’s Afghanistan, young girl stuck in a conflict zone, dusty face un adorned, ragged robe is very suggestive of their situation, fragile, torn. A photograph doesn’t magically conveys meaning, or changes the world, it opens up discussion, people asks questions, the picture gains meaning, held status, tells stories, document events, create a driving force of change within the society.
That, is the true power of a photograph. The power to engage, and the power to drive change.

A designer’s block often refer to an idea shortage or a total blockage of a designer’s mind / vision / brain / creativity and what have you. To me however, a designer’s block is just due to lack of expressiveness and pampering to one’s willingness to do something, designers are often slaved to do something they don’t like, and due to this unworldly ethics, a designer will easily relate a designer’s block to his “vanishing” creativity.
upon reading up the many designer’s testimonial, i’ve recovered an interesting fact… that their ideas, doesn’t come from their field, but it’s often things that have totally NO connection to what they do… but by drawing that line between 2 things that doesn’t connect, will fuse out a very very interesting design.
so yeah, shiaw here’s the one that i think can be used… drop me a msg and tell me what you think, the first and 2nd one could prolly squeeze some more info in them, incase you need to put some venues or something…
