Day 111 : Humble Learner

No matter how smart you think you are, trust me you aren’t.

best way to improve is by being humble, and reciving critiques, not to blindly listen, but you have to recieve! i’ve talked to my lecturer today, she gave me a lot of good input for my projects… and though i’d swhat you gonna do? by ~MakoyRoquehare some interesting ones…

My thesis revolves around photography and graphic design, the notion of how persuasive photography is in our society. Being the massive influence they really are, most of the time they’re being exploited by advertisers, and almost always with negative effect, no? I’m trying to address some of these issues… and if i may, i’d want to make my project a good cause! not only address, but will be able to help…

what’s been up with our world? the power of photography, exploited to a point beyond what words put together can explain. The speed of a photograph being taken, till it’s exposed on photoblogs, real time. I believe that with much faster process of things, people appreciate it less. This picture (1st one) is of a women in a bath tub, and the photo is filed under “ARTISTIC NUDE”, seriously, other then exploiting this women’s image, she’s just trying to take a shower for pete’s sake! and the “photographer’s” camera of choice, a nokia 5300. I’ll leave the judging to you. You have a camera phone, and you’re an instant photographer.

Harma + Sanne 01 Sky Balloons by *vallendesterCurrently, every other photographer would not be simply satisfied with their photos, of course until they went through post-processing, so what is this post processing? better known as photoshopping, colors are adjusted, shades are leveled, skin is smoothed, frame becomes tighter… all these things you can do to make a normal looking picture, into a highly value added one.

example no2 on the balloon girl. for sure we know the sky’s not beige, but through color alteration, it is what we see, but, is seeing really believing now? That’s simple to answer, but not many of the people know it yet. Our eyes are easily decieved, because our eyes are a mere visual receptor, a lens, a mean to transfer an image. So what created the lie? it’s the process after the transfer of an image, our mind will decode the photo, looking for colors, shapes, symbols, mood, relations and many things that i don’t even know myself!

looking at the pic gives me a nostalgic feeling, the colors helps me relate well to a serene feeling… the balloons give it a sense of childhood, fun and color burst! these excite our sensations. we can also see the background, it’s outdoor, the sun is shining, direction of her hair suggestes some wind… a feeling of freedom, positive thoughts, but also about letting go…

normally we wouldn’t decode a picture literally, but an average person actually does have thousands of things going on in their mind while looking at a picture. I decode the pictures in the way I did, because of what i can relate them with, i like outdoor grass field, breeze feels romantic to me, balloons are given on birthdays and i associate it with happiness, but i lost my ballooon many times, so it’s also about letting go. 1 visual, infinite interpretations.

His World by =D3sh1

Black and White photography is very interesting, it takes away color. Strip a picture off of its hues, and also it’s color symbolism contexttually. A sick person is pale, if color is taken away, you would see the sick person’s face, body language, relation towards his space, basically a heightened sense of awareness towards a picture.

These kinds of picture is an open board discussion isn’t it? you start asking questions, how old is he?? what does he do? what are those things at the back? oh, cameras, does he take photos? or does he fix them? or does he sell them? or even better still, is he a collector?

The point whereby questions are being asked, and you started studying details within the photo, shows audience participation in decoding a  photograph. A photo is just a photo by itself, but the one that embrace, and give meaning to the photograph, is still the viewer.  The Afghan Girl photo is a good example, if you blantly see it, it’s a girl, staring back, green eye, red robe, dusty. Contextually though, it’s Afghanistan, young girl stuck in a conflict zone, dusty face un adorned, ragged robe is very suggestive of their situation, fragile, torn. A photograph doesn’t magically conveys meaning, or changes the world, it opens up discussion, people asks questions, the picture gains meaning, held status, tells stories, document events, create a driving force of change within the society.Afghan Girl

That, is the true power of a photograph. The power to engage, and the power to drive change.

Day 109 : Celebrating my M.I.A for 69 days

a little update is that, i finished i’ve finished my first term of studies here in Shanghai, the weather is getting cold, and i love the mood it creates :) it makes me feel that i’m in a good mood all the time! you don’t need the heater, nor the air conditioning.. isn’t this just what life was meant to be?

2nd term was very hectic, but since i kinda get the hang of degree classes, i can manage my time and work more efficiently compared to last term! and I even get to enjoy a little social life haha :)

last friday *19th oct , a couple of my friends decided to meet up at page’s house, and we had a fairly decent home cooked lunch (fried rice that appears to be a fried congee) what a food… it taste better then it looked though! after that we decided to play some card games, haha and that’s when the party started… we played “bluff” with 3 decks of cards, and 1 giant cooking oil sized bottle of chinese home made wine, hardcore… i was the first to get tipsy, lost so many rounds… but after we finished the bottle,  we continued with beers while playing “smallest drink” that is the card on the forehead, and see who’s the smallest one, and that’s when i get sober, and everybody else got drunk, haha so conclusion is? I WON damn it! hahha… funny day :)

the fastest way to get drunk!page thinks i got the smallest numbergroup pic for the sake of formalitythis is bluff, haha..Oh no! he got lesser card then me

hope ya’ll out there is doing great, whoever you are…

Day 40 : The Simpsons

i think i look like this!Up coming simpson movie release is booming with fun stuff to advertise on the movie, could they bart and homer beat jacky and chris ? in the box office hit simpson the movie, everybody will revive the simpson in them! so here’s my version :)

by the way, thanks to ek on introducing this funny and really time consuming site to me :P kudos EK, haah you’ve made a good one out of yourself too, rock on sista!does it look like her ?? mmm... oh and she made one for me too, so this is what i look like according to EK… kinda funky and wayyyyyyyyyyyy to druggy ahaha but i love it, thanx mate :) james accordin to ek but here’s the best one i think, hahah i was just blankly staring at denni’s msn when i was doing mine, and suddenly ahahhaahah i decided to do his, haha somehow he have a more generic face, so yeah easier i suppose :) here goes! i present to you, DENNI! funny lah si denni haahaah oh look at the time, i better get ready now, and start walking to school… got a class on academic writing, bah~ see you guys later! peace and revive the simpson in ya!

Day 39 : Designer’s Block

exSPLASHiveA designer’s block often refer to an idea shortage or a total blockage of a designer’s mind / vision / brain / creativity and what have you. To me however, a designer’s block is just due to lack of expressiveness and pampering to one’s willingness to do something, designers are often slaved to do something they don’t like, and due to this unworldly ethics, a designer will easily relate a designer’s block to his “vanishing” creativity.

NOT TRUE

A designer will never lose his creativity, nor a swimmer will forget how to swim. Most designer however, takes up the habit of STUDYING and LEARNING and OBSERVING what other designer does, this doesn’t truly expand your horizon, but infact i might even narrow it down. You see, and you remember, you think, and you forget. Once this cycle start, you’ll feel that you’re creating something new, you think that you’ve create a ground breaking design, but is it true? maybe not, in the back of your little brain database counter, it was already recorded earlier that some other designer did a simliar thing, but you apparently have forgotten all about it… yes it may be innovative, but it is not an invention. It can still be creative though, don’t get me wrong. I just think that there is a much better way to expand the horizon. In my dictionary, a designer should not only study what other designer does, they should keep up with the current trend, the current technology, and the current world, this will make you an effective designer, but how to be a great designer?

light sideupon reading up the many designer’s testimonial, i’ve recovered an interesting fact… that their ideas, doesn’t come from their field, but it’s often things that have totally NO connection to what they do… but by drawing that line between 2 things that doesn’t connect, will fuse out a very very interesting design.

I have taken the same step, but am i a great designer ? hahahaah not yet though… Nothing great comes easy. On a personal level, how do I treat this designer’s block really? I pamper myself, that’s easy right? just take up the “because i said so” attitude, and the “i’ll do what i want” mindset.

Thanks to shiawyan, who gave me this pretty interesting project, to design a poster for this fashion event in school, it’s about expressing yourself, as the title obviously suggest…
but what is interesting about this is that, the way of thinking behind it…

try asking the weird questions, and connect 2 trains of thoughts together…

what does fashion taste like?
what color is disco?
what mood is black?
why isn’t black, red color?
which galaxy does green come from?
what kind of liquid does fashion drink?
what kind of house is fashion?

beauty is in the eye of the beholderso yeah, shiaw here’s the one that i think can be used… drop me a msg and tell me what you think, the first and 2nd one could prolly squeeze some more info in them, incase you need to put some venues or something…

the 3rd one is also possible, but will have to play with it even more… but do confirm with me the details first! cheers!

Cheeky Chery Die Lah…

Upon surfing through youtube as the freak that i am, i came across this wonder of nature,
a crash test of this wonderful car (changed several names, and “modified” several times)
but anyway, here’s the test of the car of this series….

Test result : Failed
i let you have your own conclusion… however, on the side note,
that this chinese’ car, have their crash test done
in a russian lab by a russian car manufacturer (also direct competiror), largest in the country.
russia is china’s largest auto export market,  and Chery Automotive,
because of their cheap price (the car above starting US$9000),
have become one of the best selling car brand in russia.

Day 37 : Boredivity

i no understand, language the usage in the gameto practice my chinese, i have decided to buy a chinese game, and of course not just any game, it have to be a game that i’ve played in english before, so i can roughly know the story! but after playing half way, i’m more then 150% confused!!
i know nothing about the game anymore, all the animal have some sort of chinese names, the instruction to deal with some situation is also in chinese… so yeah i’m stuck in some town with a chinese name…. talk about bordom….
conclusion : buy english games, don’t be a smart ass

Sketchbook

scrapbook for my final project outcome, evidence bag that seals proof of our distructive culture against nature

I have a deadline on friday, i’m suppose to submit my sketchbook, a presentation book, and a final outcome of my presentation…

but heyyyyyyyy guess what?? i handed in my presentation book, and my final outcome, i missed my sketch book!!! oh shittttttt that’ll consist of 70% of my score, 35% being documentation and 35% on ideas or something of that sort…. anyway what i meant was a whole chunk of points are there…

luckily looking at the reciept (yes we have to make a reciept for handing in and proof of our work), Itamar (the teacher in charge) just easily ticked off the sketch book part, so making it as if i handed it in already… haha oh well, i’ll just re submit on monday :)

Day 36 : Survival tips

surviving on carbo!daily dose of liquid

CARBO & LIQUID

it’s been a month here in shanghai, but what have i been surviving from?
thank god to consumerism and globalization, the celebrated branding world have taken china over… so basically we can kinda get western branded foods here in china…
i checked out the supermarket and the first super brand that hits me was LAYS, horray! carbohydrate! do you know that our body burns carbohydrate first before they burn any fats?
so before u become those stick man, make sure you stuff up on carbo :)
tip no2 is that even though you aren’t eating well, you can always get well from drinking liquid! i tried hard to follow a strict rule of drinking water everyday, plus the juice (oh thank god again, minute maid is available) after i finish up juice, then fill it up with water…. so your body won’t dry up and since water is the universal solvent, i think that it can solve all our sickness away!

total consumptions : 12 lays (not in picture, throwned the other 2 away), and plenty of water!! 10 1.5l of minute maid, 8 .75l of minute maid

Day 34 : Night Walking

my apartment is the one on the right, by the 2nd street light wonderful colors reflected on the housing

WALKING THE DOG

actually not really, i’m just walking my ipod around…
good luck in rushing my work haha…
today i went out to meet up with my friend for dinner and then coffee…
… borrowed a camera for taking some pics for my project …
Thx barbara ^_^!
I visited starbucks, or as i overhead overheard in chinese it’s called “SHIN PA KE”,
pretty interesting… coffee still taste the same though :)
anyways i’m suppose to do my work with this digicam, but what did i do in the end?
yes taking useless photographs hahah oh that’s so me!
because the places here are so photoworthy, the details are so rich,
a city where advancement clashes with the local culture,
lifestyle that varies form one household to another,
the diversity is so overwhelming :)

okay now i really really gonna start my work!

Physical Breakdown

i remember dearly the day that stanley said these very words (translated in english) :
“Sometimes human just have physical limits that no positive mindset and strong will can overcome” (or something along that line)…

Evidence Bagjust today i before came home, i already plan on how to start on my project, it’s an investigation and practice class, my work / project must create awareness to the public, and the specific subject i’ve chosen is that humans are destroying their own environment, killing trees…

my idea is creating a “crime scene” whereby trees have been murdered by this “serial killer”, it’s a simple idea that just drives people to realize the obvious, that they themselves are killing these trees… i started walking around parks and public places where the urban trees are, and omg… trash everywhere,  ciggy butts, and soil as hard as clay, disastrous… i collect all these little “evidence” and keep them in my “evidence bag” as part of my investigation, but OMG, the sun was roasting me at 36 degrees celcius, just around 1 hour of walking, and i can’t take it anymore!

i headed home drenched in my sweat, and thought i’d cool down and do some light sketching for a while before starting work or even showering… and whala~ guess what, it’s been 5hour since, hahaha unconsciously fallen asleep, i don’t even know how it happened!

anyways, i’m gonna start working on my project, hope it’ll turn out fine ya!
(it’s due tomorrow, OMG!!)
